The Anabasis

Anabasis comes from the ancient Greek ana, meaning up or back, and bainein, meaning to step or go. It is an ascent, a going upward. Its story echoes Persephone's emergence from the underworld into sunlight and reunion, as well as the buried seed breaking through the soil into new growth.

The Anabasis is a complete six-week sacramental course of reflection, expansion, and integration. Participants follow a consistent rhythm of three practice mornings each week, using The Anabasis for the teachings and weekly rituals and The Calyx as the journal that holds what emerges. The course begins at its own threshold and carries participants through its own complete return.

  • Six weekly breathwork sessions; select your sessions after enrollment
  • Six weekly themes, from the sacred threshold through the return
  • Three practice mornings each week, with integration between them
  • The Anabasis course book and The Calyx companion journal
  • A standalone program with no prerequisite

Two independent paths. One open now.

The Anabasis is ready to begin. The Myesis remains in preparation. Each is complete in itself; neither is a prerequisite for the other.

Each program has its own purpose, practices, and rhythm. Choose the one that meets you where you are. You do not need to complete The Myesis before entering The Anabasis, and The Anabasis does not lead into The Myesis.

  • You built a life that looks successful, but achievement no longer feels like joy.
  • Your work has been lost, disrupted, or reshaped by AI, and the path ahead no longer looks familiar.
  • You are moving through a change in career, relationship, identity, community, or stage of life.
  • You are still finding your way and sense that old fears or expectations are narrowing what feels possible.
  • You repeat reactions or patterns you understand intellectually but have not been able to release.
  • Choose The Anabasis for a six-week personal practice with six weekly breathwork sessions.
  • Join The Myesis waitlist if you are interested in a ninety-day daily practice.

The Myesis

Myesis comes from the ancient Greek myein, meaning to close, especially to close the eyes or the lips. The same root gave us words for the initiate, the mystery, and mysticism. In the ancient mystery tradition, Myesis named the threshold of initiation: a voluntary turning away from the noise of the outer world and toward what can only be encountered within.

The Myesis is a complete practice in itself. It is a crossing of the threshold, a closing of familiar ways of seeing so that deeper patterns can be recognized. Over about ninety days, the practice moves through illumination, extrication, and elevation, creating space for old programming to loosen and a more intentional life to emerge.

  • A ninety-day daily practice, morning and night
  • Three movements: illumination, extrication, and elevation
  • Disavowal and forgiveness practice, with support for resistance
  • A complete practice designed to be walked on its own

The practice

Three movements, walked in order

The Myesis moves through three movements, always in order, because release only holds when the vow has first been named. You walk them on your own, a little each day, over about ninety days.

  1. Movement 1:

    Illumination

The practice begins with seeing. Each day you trace a present-day trigger back through body sensation and memory, gently and without force, until the old vow underneath it can be named. Most people meet a promise they made before they were seven years old.

    • The daily seeing practice
    • Body-based tracing of triggers to their origin
    • The naming of your primary vow

  2. Movement 2:

    Extrication

Naming is not enough; a vow this old must be released. This movement is Empty the Cup: daily disavowal, honest processing of the resistance that rises, and forgiveness, worked through the three cups of physical, mental, and spiritual release.

    • The daily three-cup practice
    • Support for resistance when it rises
    • Forgiveness practice, for others and for yourself

  3. Movement 3:

    Elevation

What fills the space a vow leaves behind? A new practice. Elevation stabilizes a daily rhythm of conscious living, so that response and choice take the place of automatic reaction, and the work keeps holding long after the ninety days end.

    • A daily practice you keep
    • New responses in place of old reactions
    • A rhythm designed to outlast the ninety days

Held with care

What to know before you join

Both programs are spiritual and ministerial offerings of The New Mysteries. The Anabasis intake includes the notices and agreements relevant to its sacramental practice.

Ministerial, not medical

Participation is an act of voluntary religious engagement within a registered church, held in a pastoral capacity. It is not clinical treatment, and it does not create a provider-patient relationship of any kind.

The full disclaimer and important notices are published openly, and we ask every participant to read them before enrolling.

Questions

Asked often, answered honestly

What is the difference between The Anabasis and The Myesis?

The Anabasis is an available six-week program with weekly breathwork, personal teachings, rituals, and reflection. The Myesis is a separate ninety-day individual practice organized around illumination, extrication, and elevation, currently waitlisted. Neither program is a prerequisite for the other.

Do I need to believe anything to do this work?

No. The New Mysteries is agnostic by design. We welcome people of every religious and secular background. The practices are offered as experiments to run for yourself, and your own experience is the only authority we appeal to.

Is this therapy?

No. These are religious and pastoral offerings of the church, not clinical services. Our ministry team does not provide medical or psychological treatment through these programs, and the work is not a substitute for professional care.

What is the time commitment?

The Myesis is a daily practice most people hold in 20 to 40 minutes, morning and night, across about ninety days. The Anabasis runs for six weeks, with three practice mornings each week and reflection in The Calyx between them.
